Skip hire is the leading method of waste disposal for a great variety of residential and commercial projects, tackling the inconvenience of making trips to your local recycling centre or landfill. Due to the current construction boom, skip hire services are in high demand throughout the country.

Skip hire should add convenience and peace of mind to your project, providing you with the certainty that all of your waste will be dealt with in an efficient and environmentally friendly way.

If you’re considering hiring a skip for your next project, have a look at our list of skip hire facts.

Skip Hire

Skip hire saves time and space

Having a skip on site during any construction, refurbishment or gardening project will save you time. Waste can be thrown into the skip with no need to classify or organise it. Your workspace will be clear of bulky objects which could constitute a safety hazard as well as an inconvenience to workers.

When the skip is full, an exchange or a collection can be easily booked in by contacting our operations team. Neither time nor effort need be expended by any of the workers on site in disposing of waste products.

There are different size skips

If you’ve decided to hire a skip, but you’re unsure of the skip size you require for your job, speak to one of our helpful operations team on 020 8685 9393 for advice.

One Waste provides skips in sizes ranging in 4, 6, 8, 12, 14 and 16 yards. Skips at the smaller end of the scale are suitable for kitchen and bathroom refurbishments, whereas the larger sizes are more suited to larger projects on commercial premises.

For large projects on construction sites or on industrial estates, Roll On-Off containers are commonly used, with popular sizes being 20 yard and 40 yard containers. “RORO” containers are extremely convenient due to their capacity; however, they require a lot of space and would be ill-suited to most residential projects.

Skips should be level loaded

Although it may be hard to bear this in mind if you don’t regularly use skip hire services, it’s important that skips are not loaded past the brim as this would constitute a danger when being loaded onto or unloaded from the skip lorry. It would also constitute a hazard during transport.

One Waste’s operations team are experienced in dealing with skip hire services for a wide variety of residential and commercial projects and will gladly advise you on the best skip size to suit your requirements.

Skips should be placed on your private property

You can place a skip anywhere on your private property that is safe and comfortable for your work, although this must be accessible by the skip driver for convenient delivery and collection.

If you do not have space on your property for a skip, we can request a permit from your council to place the skip on the road or other suitable public property.

One Waste will contact your local authority to arrange any permits or parking bay suspensions that may be necessary to place your skip on a road.

Standard skip hire term is two weeks

The standard term for hiring a skip is two weeks, although you may wish to change this should you require a replacement when your skip is full or if you need an extension on your hire contract.

It’s important to keep this in mind, especially if your skip is going to be placed on public property and if you are going to require permits from your local authorities.

If you are concerned about what happens to your waste when the skip lorry drives away, you shouldn’t be as One Waste are committed to the environmentally friendly treatment of waste.
